CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY

eOPERA

October 2019

The fall season is in full swing and with Thanksgiving upon us, we have so much to be grateful for at the COC! This month sees the highly anticipated opening night of Rusalka this Saturday and seven more performances of our “powerfully imaginative” (Opera Canada) Turandot. We’re also celebrating the future of opera with the ninth annual Ensemble Studio Competition and a world premiere by our Composer-in-Residence Ian Cusson.

So while you wait for the turkey to thaw, catch up on what we’re excited about this month!

A Striking Turandot

Everyone is talking about Turandot. From its top-notch performances to Robert Wilson’s “visually striking” (Ludwig van Toronto) production, there are countless reasons to witness this Puccini classic for yourself. We’ve rounded up some video highlights of this once-in-a-lifetime theatrical experience.

“Like Disney on Acid”

We caught up with choreographer Andrew George for a deep dive into the stunning dance sequences of Rusalka.

Circle of Artists: Ian Cusson

Over the next several months, we are profiling members of our Circle of Artists, an innovative, collaborative advisory body that’s shaping the COC’s commitments to Indigenous communities.

Next in this Q&A series is Ian Cusson, the COC’s new Composer-in-Residence, who is fresh off the world premiere of his new work, “Dodo, mon tout petit,” at the National Arts Centre in September. The piece was commissioned to replace the “Kuyas” aria in Harry Somers’ opera, Louis Riel

A Singer’s Journey: The Ensemble Studio Competition

Canada’s biggest opera competition is back on Wednesday, October 30, when a new generation of opera singers compete for cash prizes and a chance to join the prestigious Ensemble Studio training program. Read past winner Simona Genga’s reflections on her competition journey.

And in case you missed, we just announced this year’s finalists

Opera and Wellness

It’s no secret that music can affect our mood and state of mind, but it can also be part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle. In a new event series, we’re exploring how music can benefit our well-being, through informative lectures and hands-on activities like yoga and sing-alongs.

Remembering Jessye Norman

The opera world lost a legend last week, with the passing of Jessye Norman. As we reflect on this pioneering soprano’s legacy, we’re revisiting her in-depth conversation with our General Director Alexander Neef at TIFF, which took place ahead of her becoming the 12th recipient of the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize in a gala at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. She will be greatly missed.
