35-year-old Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa is one of the brightest lights on Havana’s thriving jazz scene. While touring widely with the Buena Vista Social Club vocalist Omara Portuondo, he launched his solo career as the leader of a superlative trio with his younger brother, the phenomenal drummer Ruy Adrián López-Nussa, and bassist Gaston Joya.

"López-Nussa’s single-note grace is akin to Herbie Hancock’s, and his two-fisted attacks are as joyous as Chick Corea’s."

Chick Corea Trio

Chick Corea Trio

THU-SUN, OCT 4-7

More than a creative force, 22-time GRAMMY Award winner and NEA Jazz Master Chick Corea is one of the era’s defining artists. His latest trio features Cuban bass master Carlitos Del Puerto and drummer Marcus Gilmore. Del Puerto, who’s making his SFJAZZ debut, went on to anchor the Chick Corea-Steve Gadd Band on the recent Chinese Butterfly, while Gilmore is one of the best drummers in jazz today, also often performing alongside Vijay Iyer, Ravi Coltrane and Taylor McFerrin.

Vicente Amigo

Vicente Amigo

THU-SUN, OCT 11-14

Crowned by the late maestro Paco de Lucía as the next great flamenco star and lauded by Pat Metheny as “the greatest guitarist alive,” Amigo has more than lived up to his promise, with pyrotechnic virtuosity, charisma, and that intangible quality of soul-searching emotion the Spanish call duende. He’s forged musical ties with artists around the world including Sting, Milton Nascimento, and Al Di Meola, and this evening includes music from the Latin GRAMMY winner’s new Sony Legacy release Memoria de los Sentidos.

"Three Is One": Thelonious Monk's Influence On Joanne Brackeen, Kris Davis & Helen Sung

BY RICHARD SCHEININ

Thelonious Monk was born 101 years ago, but his music never gets old. His tunes are accessible yet mysterious, easy to sing yet difficult to play, perfectly constructed yet tricky to decipher. Pianists Joanne Brackeen, Kris Davis and Helen Sung relay lessons from Monk's music, before all three perform in the Thelonious Monk Birthday Concert on October 10.
