The two best Bay Area string bands share a bill devoted to the timeless music of The Beatles. Led by guitar master Paul Mehling, the Hot Club of San Francisco is the country’s longest running ensemble devoted to the Gypsy jazz tradition pioneered by Django Reinhardt.

The San Francisco String Trio is made up of three masterful string players including jazz guitarist Mimi Fox, violinist Mads Tolling, and bassist Jeff Denson. The trio’s new album, The Sgt. Pepper Project, was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Beatles masterpiece.

An NEA Jazz Master and a Kennedy Center Living Jazz Legend, pianist Ahmad Jamal has long been recognized as one of the most influential figures in jazz history, and now makes a long-awaited return to live performance following a three year break. On the heels of his critically-acclaimed release Marseille, he returns with his seamless quartet featuring drummer Herlin Riley along with bassist James Cammack and percussionist Manolo Badrena.

Lavay Smith and her band with steel guitar master Bobby Black perform the music of the country music icon Patsy Cline. The group The Seattle Times calls "the best thing to come out of the jump/swing revival" will perform classic Patsy Cline hits like “Crazy,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and “She’s Got You.”

Raised by a French father and Dominican mother in the northern French town of Samois-sur-Seine – the last home of gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt – Aimée found inspiration in the music of Reinhardt. She blends a mix of her gypsy jazz inspirations, bossa nova, flamenco and the Great American Songbook in what The New York Times describes as “a bravura turn, presented with a smile.”
