Mozart's The Magic Flute opens in three weeks! The Saturday night performance is nearly sold out, but great tickets remain for the Tuesday and Thursday performances. With warm spice tones, this visually stunning set and costumes is perfect colour therapy during Edmonton's long winter. Soprano Teiya Kasahara returns to Edmonton (Tales of Hoffmann, February 2013) in her signature role as Queen of the Night, and soprano Jessica Muirhead returns to Canada as Pamina after five years of singing in Europe. The space at Tix on the Square is looking a little bit different these days! Over the holidays, renovations started to move both the Edmonton Opera box office and the Tix on the Square booth into the middle of the space, which will result in more efficient service for patrons of both organizations. Irving Guttman, known as the father of Western Canadian opera and the founding artistic director of the Edmonton Opera, passed away on Dec. 7, 2014. In addition to lengthy tenures at Manitoba Opera, Vancouver Opera, Saskatchewan Opera and Calgary Opera (sometimes simultaneously), Guttman was instrumental in Edmonton Opera's history. His memory will be honoured during our production of The Magic Flute, with a lobby display and playbill mention.
