Donizetti’s emotive opera, composed in a sublime bel canto style, pits two important women of the historical Tudor family against one another. Queen of England, Elizabeth I, is suspicious of her cousin Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. She believes Mary wants to lay claim to her throne and thus holds her captive, and even considers putting Mary to death.

When the two queens meet, they engage in a lyrical battle; for good dramatic measure, Donizetti even throws a contentious love triangle in the mix. You won’t want to miss their dramatic face-off!

April 16, 19 & 21 • Jubilee Auditorium

Tickets start at $40

Controversial because composer Donizetti took the liberty of making Elizabeth and Mary meet face-to-face (when they never actually did), Mary Stuart saw a rough journey to the stage.

Between fictional love angles, quarrelling sopranos, and the prying censors, Mary Stuart stirred up drama both on and off stage!
