KICKS OFF THIS WEEK

This Thursday night (Sep 6), we are excited to kick off the 2018-19 Season with Members-Only performances by Cécile McLorin Salvant and Taylor McFerrin. To celebrate the kick-off of the season, opening night ticket holders are invited to complimentary champagne and sweet bites as you arrive at SFJAZZ!

From September through May, the 2018-19 Season features over 350 shows that include once-in-a-lifetime performances, first-time collaborations, and exclusive premieres that you will not see anywhere else.

Eldest son of celebrated singer Bobby McFerrin, Taylor McFerrin is a cutting edge producer, keyboardist, beatboxer, and composer. Influenced by 70s soul, jazz fusion, and electronic music, he will be joined by drummer Marcus Gilmore and will be performing music from his acclaimed Brainfeeder(Flying Lotus, Thundercat) album Early Riser, and brand new music from his much-anticipated forthcoming album.

Two-time GRAMMY Winner Cécile McLorin Salvant is the most celebrated young vocalist in jazz. She returns following her latest Best Jazz Vocal Album win for her 2017 Mack Avenue release, Dreams and Daggers, with these intimate duo performances with virtuoso pianist Sullivan Fortner. They will debut music from their brand new upcoming Mack Avenue release The Window.

Formed by saxophonist Joshua Redman in tribute to his late father, saxophone giant Dewey Redman, this quartet comprising four of the greatest instrumentalists in modern jazz draws inspiration from Old and New Dreams, the iconic 1980s band featuring the elder Redman and fellow Ornette Coleman collaborators Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden, and Don Cherry. They return to SFJAZZ in celebration of the release of their new Nonesuch album, Still Dreaming.

The GRAMMY-nominated phenomenon Joey DeFrancesco remains the most virtuosic and electrifying organist in jazz, recording over 30 albums and winning the DownBeat Critics Poll eleven times and Readers Poll every year since 2005. His most recent collaboration is with rock legend Van Morrison, making their West Coast premiere performance at SFJAZZ last season.

“One of the godfathers of the jazz organ” (NY Times), NEA Jazz Master Dr. Lonnie Smith is a seminal figure in the soul-jazz movement. A singular musician who has mined the deeply funky potential of the Hammond organ more than anyone else. He performs music from his latest Blue Note release, All In My Mind, with his longstanding trio featuring guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Johnathan Blake.

The two greatest organists of the soul jazz movement of the 60s and 70s share this double bill for an evening of soulful, funky grooves. Foster is best known for his funk-laced 70s Blue Note sides that have earned devotion from hip-hop artists including A Tribe Called Quest. Wilson’s five groove-heavy Blue Note sessions of the era have been rediscovered by a new generation of fans.

A multicultural octet assembled by bassist and Snarky Puppy mastermind Michael League and features Caribbean vocalist Malika Tirolien, the band marries the electric blues of Led Zeppelin with Afropop and folkloric Caribbean styles. The group also includes lap steel virtuoso Roosevelt Collier with a trio of percussionists including longtime Paul Simon hand drummer Jamey Haddad and Banda Magda/Snarky Puppy multi-instrumentalist Keita Ogawa.

Over four nights, master slide trumpeter Steven Bernstein presents two of his most explosive ensembles including Sexmob performing music from their 2013 Nino Rota focused album on Thursday, and playing a tribute to Duke Ellington on Friday. Saturday and Sunday Bernstein presents his West Coast version of his Millenial Territory Orchestra.

Creator and innovator, musician and producer, artist and philanthropist, Herb Alpert is a man with a profound passion. A legendary trumpet player, he founded Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, an endeavour that propelled his music into the limelight. His wife, Lani Hall, is a highly decorated vocalist and producer who toured as the lead singer of the Sergio Mendes group Brasil ‘66, writing the English lyrics for many of the band’s Brazilian songs.
