Opera Alive!

Dr. Dianne Kipnes, member of the TELUS Edmonton Community Board, was pleased to be able to hand deliver a $20,000 cheque to the Edmonton Opera office in late July. Between 2005 and 2011, the Community Fund board has supported more than 250 community projects, investing $3.8 million. Our grant submission was in support of Opera Alive, which fosters opera education and engagement in schools. Opera Alive’s proposal is to repackage the content of the program electronically so more Alberta schools can access the material via the Internet. Last year more than 70 Alberta schools participated in Opera Alive, including several inner-city and First Nations schools.

Thanks PCL!

Renovations on the new Edmonton Opera production facility are nearly complete, just in time for the new season. PCL provided construction consulting expertise on the 22,500-sqaure-foot industrial warehouse space in northwest Edmonton. The building was converted to accommodate scenery and prop building, costume building and scenery storage. With the new facility, Edmonton Opera was able to consolidate operations that were scattered across three inadequate spaces in the city, which has resulted in reduced operational costs. The new space will be very busy shortly when the build for Les Contes d'Hoffmann begins.

PCL IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Announcing a new project

Opera patrons will be able to take home memories of this year’s mainstage performances, thanks to a partnership between the Edmonton Opera and the Alberta Craft Council. The opera-specific pieces will be created by local artists in the medium of their choice, and will be available for sale during the run of the production and then at Tix on the Square. Fibre artists, jewelry designers and metalsmiths, wood craftsmen, ceramic artists and glassblowers have already expressed interest in producing exclusive products for the opera.
