T. S. Monk

Next in October: Two Exciting Shows, Monk On Monk Featuring T.S. Monk, and Lightwire Theater Presents: Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey

In celebration of what would have been famed jazz composer-pianist Thelonious Monk’s 100th birthday, his son T.S. Monk carries on his father’s legacy with the groundbreaking Monk On Monk 10-piece configuration. The band features the instrumentation Thelonious himself employed in his legendary Town Hall concert. T.S. Monk is an acclaimed drummer, composer, record company founder, band leader and vocalist. His tribute to his iconic father, who was known as the “High Priest of Bebop” and the “Father of Modern Jazz,” has garnered numerous awards and critical praise. Whether newly discovered compositions by his father or the legendary songs such as “Round Midnight,” the music is overpowering, swinging and timeless. Saturday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m.

Marvin the Mouse

Through a unique combination of art, theater and technology, join Marvin the Mouse on the space adventure of a lifetime: A trip to the surface of the moon on his homemade rocket, where he meets a strange cast of misfit creatures, learns of infinite peril and views awesome beauty.

Lightwire Theater is internationally recognized and each production is a not-to-be-missed marvel of innovation, using custom costumes made of glowing, neon wire controlled by the performer in complete darkness. An inspiring experience that will delight audiences of all ages, Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey, is a cosmic adventure about celebrating differences. Saturday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m.

Gala Unlike Any Other: Focus on the Artists

Gala season is upon us, and the ARTrageous Gala at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Saturday, Dec. 2, will set a new standard for these seasonal offerings. Known for including great performances, this year’s gala represents a refreshed and energized experience, complete with dancing until midnight.

Standouts for the evening are the artists and the works being presented, featuring the photographic genius of Ansel Adams paired with a symphonic work composed by Chris Brubeck and his father, the late jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Equally exciting as the music comes to life under the baton of Maestro Peter Jaffe, will be stellar performances from the musicians, including Steve Moeckel, concertmaster of the Phoenix Symphony, and violin soloist Nick Kendall, who will play Chris Brubeck’ composed for him, Spontaneous Combustion. Tickets for the concert and after party are still available.
