The University of Virginia McIntire Department of Music presents a colloquium by Composition and Computer Technologies Visiting Scholar Zhen Wang on Friday, February 10th at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall room 107. Chinese elements, such as Chinese philosophy, Chinese musical instruments, Chinese characters, Chinese architecture, etc., have existed for thousands of years and form a unique aesthetic. Wang has been influenced to a large degree by these elements, especially Chinese philosophy. In this talk Wang will discuss ways in which she strives to incorporate Chinese elements into her process of composing electronic music works. This event is free and open to the public. Guest cellist, Alan Weinstein, will be teaching UVA cello students in an open master class on Saturday, February 11th at 1pm in Old Cabell Hall room 107. Mr. Weinstein is Associate Professor of Cello at Virginia Tech University. He is a founding member of the Kandinsky Trio with which he has performed and collaborated internationally, including multiple television and radio broadcasts. The Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia continues its 2016-17 season with concerts on Saturday, February 18th, 8:00pm, at Old Cabell Hall on the Grounds of the University of Virginia and Sunday, February 19th, 3:30pm, at Charlottesville High School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center. Both performances will be conducted by Adam Boyles, the second of three Music Director finalists selected following Kate Tamarkin’s decision to retire at the end of the current season.
The program, selected by Boyles, includes two contrasting works by Nordic musicians. Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor features guest artist Bella Hristova, described by the Washington Post as “a player of impressive power and control.” Dane Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 has been dubbed “The Inextinguishable” and is best known for dueling tympanists in the final movement of the work. Rizumik is an artist mostly known for his rhythmic and improvisational skills. In 2016, he was part of the faculty of Bobby McFerrin’s Circlesongs course, at Omega Institute, alongside Rhiannon, Judi Vinar, Joey Blake, Christiane Karam and Karen Goldfeder. He was the lead in the internationally acclaimed show The Voca People and was the 2012 American Beatbox Champion. Rizumik uses beatbox, hand percussion and vocal improvisation in his teaching. His rhythmic skills also include tap dance, body percussion, drum kits and performance with percussion syllables (“Konnakol” style). He currently teaches his own style of beatbox/vocal percussion sounds and techniques branded as “Cadenza," focusing on the parallel between human communication (languages / accents / alphabets) and the Universal language of music and rhythm. This February, UVA will once again welcome in residence world-renowned composer and lyricist Claude-Michael Schönberg and Alain Boublil, best known for their musicals Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. On Thursday, Feb. 23rd the public is invited to An Evening with Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boublil – which will feature the UVA University Singers and guest artists (led by faculty conductor Michael Slon) performing selections from several of their shows. The brief performance will be followed by a conversation with the two artists moderated by professor emeritus Marva Barnett (at whose invitation they are here), and will include reflections on their careers, the state of musical theatre today, and their current and upcoming projects. The McIntire Department of Music is pleased to announce that auditions for the Performance Concentration will take place on March 16th, 2017, 12:45-3:15pm in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. The Performance Concentration is a two-year intensive program for rising third-year music majors who have a passion for performance. The Concentration augments the music major with an additional 21 credits, and features the exciting Performance Concentration Seminar, a multi-disciplinary studio class where students receive high-level feedback from UVA’s distinguished performance faculty and peers. Other highlights include funding for two years of advanced private lessons, a group recital in the first year, and a fully-produced solo recital in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium in the final year of the program. The University of Virginia, McIntire Department of Music invites applications for a non-tenure track position in composition beginning Fall 2017. This is a three-year, non-renewable position at the rank of Assistant Professor, General Faculty. The anticipated start date of the position is July 25, 2017.
Responsibilities include teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the Composition and Computer Technologies (CCT) program. The position will teach the equivalent of three courses each semester in the applicant's area of specialization. This position will also participate in the CCT Colloquium Series, the TechnoSonics and Digitalis festivals, and engage in the artistic and scholarly life of the Music Department and the University of Virginia. Unveiling of MLK Jr. Plaque at Old Cabell Hall
On January 23rd, 2017, a dedication ceremony was held for a plaque commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s March 21st, 1963 speech at Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. The plaque was donated by brothers William and Wesley Harris. Photo credit to Dan Addison.
Any rising second-year or third-year student actively engaged in the College of Arts and Sciences is eligible to apply for J. Sanford Miller Family Arts Scholars. Application forms and materials must be submitted to mr2xk@virginia.edu by February 24th and accepted applicants will be notified in mid May. A maximum of fourteen Arts Scholars will be elected each year. These will generally break down into four in studio art, music, drama and two in dance.
