Guitar legend Pat Metheny opens Season 5 with his latest game-changing ensemble. The new quartet continues Metheny’s groundbreaking run with Mexican-born drummer Antonio Sánchez, who recently received global praise for his percussion-driven score for 2015’s Academy Award-winning film Birdman. When Linda Oh’s not leading her own band, the Malaysian-born, Australian-raised bassist works with heavyweights like Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas. And 35-year-old British pianist Gwilym Simcock is one of Europe’s most acclaimed and influential young musicians.

A pioneering Beirut-born trumpeter who fuses jazz, traditional Arabic melodies, and chansons from his adopted France. For this performance, his quintet will feature music from his latest Impulse! release, Kalthoum, a tribute to the late Egyptian vocalist Oum Kalthoum, the most famous vocalist of the Arab world and an artist widely known as “Kawkab al-Sharq” (كوكب الشرق), or “Star of the East.”

SFJAZZ announces the unveiling of a new photography installation from legendary photographer and longtime SF resident Jim Marshall in the windows of the vacant San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) building across the street from the SFJAZZ Center on Franklin Street at Fell Street in the city’s Hayes Valley neighborhood. The installation will be unveiled at dusk this Thursday!
