Alejandro Cerrudo: Mats Ek "is one of the greatest."

The dancers are deeply inspired, and excited to be working with Mats Ek — a sure sign that this choreographer is at the forefront of the art form.

But don't take our word for it. Alejandro Cerrudo, Hubbard Street's Resident Choreographer and a Company Dancer, shared his thoughts before a recent rehearsal for Casi-Casa  with Mats Ek himself.

How would you describe the choreographic process?
It’s amazing. I’m loving the process. He’s extremely demanding and specific, but at the same time, there's a lot of room for my own expression. I’m investing a lot emotionally in the piece.

How do you find your own way in a piece with such specific choreography?
He takes so much material from everyday life situations and relationships. His work has a very specific physicality. And then there's this whole universe of emotions. Yes, the steps are very exact and precise, but it’s up to me to research and to get deeper and deeper into my role.

What is it like to work with one of your heroes?
It’s one of the most exciting things I’ve done at Hubbard Street as a dancer. Dancing this piece is one of the highlights of my life. Mats Ek is one choreographer I always wanted to work with. And I wasn’t sure if I was going to get that opportunity before I stopped dancing. To me, he’s one of the greatest.
